Stamp out Hunger
The National Association of Letter Carriers annually sponsors Stamp out Hunger nationwide. The event has historically been the ?Saturday before Mother's Day. The letter carriers and postal workers do a marvelous job collecting nonperishable canned goods left at individual mailboxes,. By the end of the Saturday collection day, they have collected millions of canned goods nationwide. Locally, between Friendswood and Pearland, they generally collect 10,000 pounds. WOW!!! This is a wonderful blessing. The summer is about to begin, children are out of school, and they are HUNGRY!!
School is nearly out!† The summer is about to begin!† Children are out of school and they are hungry!† At this time each year, Christian Helping Hands accepts all types of snacks that volunteers at CHH put in lunch bags to give out to families with children.† Often times, the children of families in need are home alone and do not have food available to them, so the snack bags are a way to give them something to eat during the day.† From the end of May through the end of August, all snack type items are welcomed donations!† Suggested snacks: pudding or jello cups, granola bars, raisins, fruit rollups, crackers & cheese, trail mix, etc.
Multiple times during the year
Red Barrel Food Drives
Throughout the year, the Houston Food Bank (and formerly, the Endhunger Network) host red barrel food drives, known as Stop the Hunger in local grocery stores throughout the nation.† The barrels allow shoppers to purchase needed nonperishable food for assistance agencies located in their home area.† Christian Helping Hands is thankful to be the benefactor of numerous red barrels in the Friendswood and Pearland communities.† Our volunteers man the barrels to encourage shoppers to purchase pre-sacked items for CHH, resulting in the collection of thousands of pounds of canned goods. More information about this national program is located online: www.houstonfoodbank.org
